Unique Multilevel Approach To Learning
A pre test to determine the level of knowledge of American English, spelling and reading then began to be used for each student at the beginning of the school year and the child was assigned a spelling level to work on based on where they were comfortable. It did not matter what the normal level for that grade was ex: if the child was in the 6th grade but only spelling and reading on the 2nd grade level they started at level B. Others in the same classroom that were spelling at an 8th grade level were assigned to level G.Each child then progressed on the level where they started and moved through that level of learning spelling, penmanship and creative writing using the words of that level. Positive reinforcement is a key to this program. It was not uncommon for a child to advance 2-3 school years during the year they were in this elementary teacher's classroom.
Based on the success of these students, the program continued to be developed and broadened to include review words and seasonal words like pumpkin and autumn during the fall and holiday and stocking during the winter.
The program covers homonyms and American English language spelling rules. Also added are exercises in penmanship and creative writing. The 40 week program includes a full school year's worth of spelling lessons. Word lists are ranked according to difficulty in levels A through H with level A corresponding to grades 1-2 and level H corresponding to grade 9.
Again, a spelling pre test is taken when starting with this program to determine the current spelling level. When learning on level all of the normal teasing or comparison is avoided. If words are too easy the level can be adjusted to accommodate the learning that is taking place or has taken place. Each person or student can progress at their own pace. Those who have trouble with spelling can achieve success by mastering words they can handle and then make progress from there.
Likewise, those students with a knack for spelling don't get bored. They can keep advancing to increasingly difficult words. Spelling lists are provided in such a way that each student masters American English at their own pace.
A child or an adult that is in the process of learning American English as a language or as a second language can find success with this method of learning as it allows a simple system to approaching and mastering the American English language.
This system can be used by children in school using English or anyone across the world who might want to learn the American English language to do so easily and without pressure from the normal systems that are not as effective with their approach.
Starting from a level where the learner is comfortable, progressing through the lessons at a pace that is comfortable with the positive reinforcement that is experienced and the sense of accomplishment are the primary benefits of this language arts program. Learning on level and immediate application of the spelling words by the creative writing exercises are the keys that create the level of success experienced through the years of use by this teacher and then many other teachers across the country who have used this system.
This program has been put online in the hopes that it will give many people a system with an excellent track record of accomplishment. Whether it is used for a child who is being homeschooled, a child who needs additional help in the public or private school systems or someone who is interested in learning the American English language who lives anywhere around the world.
